HAWKINS, Louis Welden
(b. 1849, Stuttgart, d. 1910, Paris)

Portrait of Séverine

1893
Oil on canvas, 77 x 55 cm
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

The portrait of the journalist Séverine and its frame are among the most remarkable works by Hawkins. In this portrait he gave a provocative image of the celebrated journalist and apostle of social solidarity, a blend of Pre-Raphaelitism and Ingres-like sophistication with odd hints of naturalism.
