Willem van Herp was a painter of history scenes with small figures, often inspired by the work of Rubens and other leading history painters. However, among the most attractive works by his hand are a number of genre paintings, mainly scenes with peasants in an inn or around a table. These paintings are related to the peasant scenes Teniers or David Ryckaert the Younger painted after the 1640s.
