Model of the `Zum Tanz" house (reconstruction)

Kupferstichkabinett, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel

Like all the murals by Holbein, the decoration of the "Zum Tanz" house was also destroyed, the building having been demolished in the 18th century. 17th-century sources indicate that the paintings were already in very bad condition then due to exposure to the weather. However, with the help of drawn copies, the decoration can be conclusively reconstructed. The Eisengasse façade is the one on the left in the model, the Tanzgässlein façade the one on the right.
