HONDECOETER, Melchior d'
(b. 1636, Utrecht, d. 1695, Amsterdam)

Birds in a Park

-
Oil on canvas, 142 x 122 cm
Private collection

De Hondecoeter painted almost exclusively bird subjects, whether exotic or game, in park-like landscapes or wild surrounds. His paintings feature geese, partridge, pigeons and peacocks, but also African and Asian cranes, yellow-crested cockatoos and grey-headed lovebirds. He was bold in his style, nuanced in his use of colour, and a skilled draughtsman.
