One example of the unbridled pomp during the reign of Louis XIV is the gold nef in which the king's napkin and eating utensils were religiously stored. It was an object of lavish elegance, and normally was displayed in the Salon de l'Abondance in Versailles. The Salon was decorated appropriately by Houasse, as shown by the detail of the ceiling,
