HUYSUM, Jan van
(b. 1682, Amsterdam, d. 1749, Amsterdam)

Still-Life of Flowers

1734
Oil on panel, 81 x 61 cm
Private collection

This painting is one of the approximately 250 still-lifes by Van Huysum known today, the vast majority of which are in permanent collections. His works are characterised by a consistently high level of quality, which is a result of the artist's practice of working entirely on his own. Indeed, Van Huysum gained a reputation for secrecy, refusing anyone admission to his workshop lest they should see how he prepared his pigments or learn what techniques he used to produce his pictures.
