JACOPO del CASENTINO
(b. ca. 1297, Firenze, d. ca. 1349, Pratovecchio)

Madonna Enthroned with Angels and Saints

1320-30
Tempera on wood, 39 x 42 cm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

This work is a precious portable tabernacle with shutters. In the central panel is the enthroned Madonna and Child, four Angels and Saints on the left and the Crucifixion on the right. It is the only signed work by this painter and as such represents a basis for reconstructing his entire artistic production.

Like Bernardo Daddi and his workshop, Jacopo del Casentino seems to have played an important part in the spread of this type of small altar and small tabernacle for private worship since he and his circle were responsible for many works of the period belonging to this genre.
