San Pier Maggiore Altarpiece (1370-71)
by JACOPO DI CIONE

Jacopo di Cione and his workshop painted the high altar of the Benedictine nunnery of San Pier Maggiore, Florence in 1370-71. The church of the convent was one of the oldest in Florence. During 1783 renovations caused part of the building to collapse, and it was mostly destroyed in 1784, although the façade remained. The altarpiece in the National Gallery, London is complete except for its frame (lost) and predella (dispersed in other collection). The reconstruction of the altarpiece was sugested by Richard Offner and refined by Jill Dunkerton on the basis of technical examinations of the panels in the National Gallery, London.

The main part of the altarpiece consisted of the Coronation of the Virgin, surmounted by the Resurrection and the Three Marys at the Sepulchre, finally crowned by the Trinity. Paired above the left panel of Adoring Saints were the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, crowned by Seraphim, Cherubim and Adoring Angels. Paired above the right panel of Adoring Saints were the Ascension and Pentecost, crowned by Seraphim, Cherubim and Adoring Angels.

Six predella panels of the altarpiece still exist, dispersed in different collections, namely: The Arrest of St Peter (Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence); St Peter Liberated from Prison (Museum of Art, Philadelphia); St Peter raising the Son of Theophilus (Pinacoteca, Vatican); The Chairing of St Peter at Antioch (Pinacoteca, Vatican); The Last Meeting of Sts Peter and Paul (present whereabouts unknown); The Crucifixion of St Peter (Pinacoteca, Vatican).
