The Finnish painter of this canvas strikes a decidedly Parisian note in this picture. The milieu is characteristically that of a city. But formally, too, the artist has used a compositional approach that was typical of Caillebotte and Degas, just as his gleaming brushwork recalls Manet. The spatial composition is firm, with an emphasis on verticals and horizontals. However, the spiral stair in the background is unusual.
