Portrait of Adam de Coster

c. 1630
Engraving, 239 x 168 mm
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, San Francisco

Adam de Coster (1586-1643) was a contemporary Flemish painter. This engraving was executed after a painting in grisaille by van Dyck. The portrait was included in van Dyck's "Iconography" (Icones Principum Virorum), a collection of portraits of leading personalities of van Dyck's time. Below his portrait de Coster is described as a Pictor Noctium i.e. a 'Painter of Nights', a clear reference to his preference for tenebrist scenes.
