JONGKIND, Johan Barthold
(b. 1819, Lattrop, d. 1891, La Côte-Saint-André)

View of Rouen

1865
Oil on canvas, 42 x 56 cm
Private collection

When Jongkind visited Paris in 1860, with watercolours and wintry or moonlit landscapes he had done in Holland, he was so great a success with his fellow artists and the critics that he decided to concentrate on the sought-after Dutch motifs of his home, Paintings such as View of Rouen date from the decade of his artistic breakthrough. His palette lightened at this time. His brushwork was bold, unconstrained and sketchy, revealing his interest in recording the mood and atmospherics of the moment.
