KEYSER, Hendrick de
(b. 1565, Utrecht, d. 1621, Amsterdam)

Portrait of Vincent Coster

1608
Marble, height 75 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This is one of the earliest civilian portrait busts made in the Netherlands. It was commissioned by Vincent Coster (1553-1608), a wealthy Amsterdam vintner and wine-gauger. The white marble, rarely used by Dutch sculptors that time, gives the bust a classical air, which is reinforced by clothing, an elegantly draped toga.
