KEYSER, Hendrick de
(b. 1565, Utrecht, d. 1621, Amsterdam)

Effigy of William the Silent

c. 1614
Terracotta, length 61 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This is a terracotta model for the effigy of William the Silent lying in state, made for his tomb in the Nieuwe Kerk at Delft. The delicate model of the prince on his deathbed, with his dog at his feet, differs only slightly from the life-size white marble effigy. De Keyser made a realistic rendering of the dead prince, carefully depicting the details of the face, hands, and clothing.
