This portrait depicts the bereaved Duchess of Berry. Her husband, Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois, Duke of Berry, was assassinated on February 13, 1820 by an opponent of the Bourbons. The Duchess and her daughter turn toward the bust of the deceased sculpted by Henri-Joseph Ruxthiel in 1817.
