KNIJFF (KNYFF), Dutch family of painters and draughtsmen of Flemish origin

The best-known member of the family was Wouter Knijff, who was active as a painter of river landscapes in Haarlem. Of his seven children, three studied with him and became painters: Jacob Knyff, Willem Knijff (b. 1646) and Leonard Knyff (1650-1721). Like his father, Willem (who entered the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem on 12 April 1670) specialized in river landscapes. Jacob and Leonard were active primarily in London, where the latter practised also as an auctioneer.
