Man in an Interior

1648
Oil on panel, 66 x 55 cm
Private collection

The artist here depicts a cavalier sitting at a table in an inn, ruefully holding his upturned glass, while an empty pewter jug rolls on the floor. In the background two servants are kissing in a doorway; the open window at the left offers the viewer a glimpse of a figure on a bridge.

This painting is traditionally entitled Het leege wijnglas (The Empty Wineglass).
