KÖNIG, Johann
(b. 1586, Nürnberg, d. 1642, Nürnberg)

The Death of Niobe's Children

-
Oil on canvas, 80 x 97 cm
Private collection

This painting is one of König's most ambitious, multi-figural compositions and is painted on an unusually large scale. It reveals a synthesis of the artist's Roman style with that of the great 16th century Venetian colourists. The strong Venetian overtones derive also from the influence of his fellow countryman, Johann Rottenhammer.
