The Pontine Marshes at Sunset

1848
Oil on canvas, 62 x 11 cm
Nationalgalerie, Berlin

This panorama by the painter-poet and writer on art August Kopisch, was completed in 1848. The artist was befriended in Capri by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, who granted him a number of royal commissions, which caused Kopisch to move to Berlin and Potsdam. The king bought this sweeping vista, whose realistic yet romantic transcription of light comes close to that of the Luminists.
