In this painting the city streets are briefly suggested with a few sketchy façades, and in the background are a top-hatted man and a horse-drawn carriage; but the foreground is entirely occupied by the jovial cabman, more a type than an individual. We are shown just enough of the cab to be in no doubt that he is seated on the box, and the raised whip is absolutely unambiguous.
