Apple Cup

1510-15
Silver, embossed and partially cast, height 21,6 cm
Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg

The silver-gilt Apple Cup, a Nuremberg product, is frequently linked with Dürer since he designed similar cups. The goldsmith presented a plump apple, its top sliced horizontally to form the lid. Its foot is in the form of a curved stem ornamented with leaves and blossom. The cup integrates natural features and accomplished artistry in order to delight the sophisticated consumer.
