LACROIX, Charles-François
(b. ca. 1700, Marseille, d. 1782, Berlin)

Mediterranean Seaport

1759
Oil on canvas, 36 x 44 cm
Private collection

The present signed and dated coastal scene, depicting a Mediterranean seaport with Orientals conversing beneath an ancient Roman arch, a man'o'-war at anchor beyond, is characteristic of Lacroix's refined style. It features motifs and elements popular with artists influenced by Vernet in their recreation of a timeless Mediterranean world.
