LAGRENÉE, Louis-Jean-François
(b. 1724, Paris, d. 1805, Paris)

Venus and Nymphs Bathing

1776
Oil on canvas, 85 x 100 cm
Private collection

From 1755 to 1798 Lagrenée exhibited at the Salon one hundred and fifty pictures of them sixty-nine were mythological subjects - more than any other eighteenth century painter. The Venus in this painting, sculptural and beautifully observed, is the archetypal Lagrenée female figure.
