Portrait of Antonio Canova

Like his father, Lampi the Younger was a successful portraitist. The portrait of Canova is a replica by the son of the original version by his father. The monumental sculpture of the mourning genius, depicted in the portrait, is a detail from the tomb of Maria Christina of Austria. Its instalment in 1805 in the Augustinerkirche in Vienna was supervised by Canova in person. This presented the occasion to paint this portrait.
