Those painters who followed the example of Courbet found their work rejected or ignored, which is what happened to Alphonse Legros to the point where in 1863 he went into voluntary exile in England. Legros was even accused, with The Shrine at the 1861 Salon, of reviving the scandal of Burial at Ornans.
