Mona Lisa (detail)

1503-5
Oil on panel
Musée du Louvre, Paris

The sensuous quality of the picture is shown particularly well by the hands. The right is resting relaxedly on the left which is gripping the chair back. In his description of the Mona Lisa, Giorgio Vasari also praised its vividness, saying that "one could swear that the pulses were beating".
