LEONARDO da Vinci
(b. 1452, Vinci, d. 1519, Cloux, near Amboise)

Study for Madonna and Child with St Anne

1503-17
Black chalk, wash and white highlights on paper, 230 x 245 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

The study of Mary's garment has been produced very sensitively. Leonardo used blue and brown washes to give the black garment an impressive delicateness. A second, similarly skillful study in Windsor makes it clear just how carefully he prepared this painting.
