LEONARDO da Vinci
(b. 1452, Vinci, d. 1519, Cloux, near Amboise)

Allegory with wolf and eagle

c. 1516
Red chalk on paper, 170 x 280 mm
Royal Library, Windsor

The drawing is probably an allusion to the meeting of Pope Leo X and François I, King of France. The boat steered by the wolf and the crowned eagle on the globe refer to the pope and the king, respectively.
