LEONARDO da Vinci
(b. 1452, Vinci, d. 1519, Cloux, near Amboise)

Natural disaster

1517-18
Black chalk, pen and ink on paper, 162 x 203 mm
Royal Library, Windsor

The formalized depiction of a natural disaster continues what Leonardo had begun in his diagrammatical depictions of water. He depicted the forces at work in water and in the air, the results of his own basic research. Here the artist had become a scientist. The drawing proves Leonardo's advanced knowledge in this field.
