LEONARDO da Vinci

Studies for a Building on a Centralised Plan

1487-90
Pencil and ink on paper
Bibliothèque de l'Institut de France, Paris

In this study the artist seeks to perfect his ideas for the architectural dome with complementary smaller domes dotted around it. He experimented also with the idea of a small set of stairs leading to the entrance. The smaller drawing on the left hand side does not seem to have carried quite the same level of importance to the artist.

This drawing is from Codex B in the Institut de France in Paris, a model book of the types of sacred and profane buildings.
