Ceiling decoration (detail)

c. 1520
Palazzo Ducale, Mantua

Lorenzo Leonbruno, just back from a brief visit to Rome, painted fantastical grotesques, classicising busts, allegorical figures, and hunt scenes on the ceiling of the Sala della Scalcheria in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. At the centre of the ceiling in this large room Leonbruno reproduced Mantegna's oculus from the Camera degli Sposi, perhaps because Isabella missed having it close to her rooms.
