LEPRINCE, Auguste-Xavier
(b. 1799, Paris, d. 1826, Nice)

The Harvest

1822
Oil on canvas, 24 x 32 cm
Private collection

In the rich landscape depicted by Leprince, a dog runs over a bridge towards the harvesters, giving a sense of urgency to the toil which must be completed before the impending storm breaks. The dark grey clouds are rolling in fast and the family of workers are hurriedly stacking the hay bale from the horse cart.

The painting is signed and dated on the bridge, lower right: 'a.x. Leprince 1822'.
