A series of twelve enamel plaques, of which the picture shows one, was commissioned by François I and delivered to Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1547. By then, however, Henri II had acceded to the throne, and he presented them to his favourite, Diane de Poitiers. They figured in the decor of the chapel at Anet until the French Revolution, when they were dispersed. The cartoons were realized by the painter Michel Rochetel after designs by Primaticcio.
