Annunciation (detail)

1437-39
Tempera on wood
Frick Collection, New York

The depiction of the Virgin's shadow against the wall is astonishing. At this date it was still unusual in Florence to show a sacred figure casting such a precisely delineated shadow. It can be explained by the desire to affirm the Annunciation as a physically real event.
