The Funeral of St Stephen (detail)

Duomo, Prato

In the Prato frescoes, Lippi concentrated the portraits within the lowest tier of his fresco cycle, where they would be most visible by his patrons and the public. The portraits appear on the left wall in the Funeral of St Stephen. The four figures on the right are identified as Pope Pius II (the portly cleric in red robe), Cardinal Carlo de' Medici, Fra Diamante, and the artist himself.
