Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome

The private chapel was an especially effective means of denoting status within the Church hierarchy. The Carafa Chapel at Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, commissioned by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa from Filippino Lippi, is among the most ornate of the period. On the right wall of the chapel is a representation of the Triumph of St Thomas over Heresy, and, in the lunette above, scenes from the life of the saint. The four reclining female figures in the vaults are figures of sibyls.
