Crucifixion of St Philip

1487-1502
Fresco
Strozzi Chapel, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

The Crucifixion of St Philip is in the lunette above the scene of St Philip Driving the Dragon from the Temple on the right wall of the chapel. In this scene we see the apostle Philip, eighty-seven years old, being crucified in Hieropolis. Two men on the right are helping to steady the cross with ladders, while two others on the left are pulling on ropes tied to it, trying to make it stand upright. With a branch an old soldier in the foreground attempts to force the base of the cross into the hole dug for it.
