LONGHI, Barbara
(b. 1552, Ravenna, d. ca. 1638, Ravenna)

Madonna and Child

-
Oil on canvas, 42 x 34 cm
Private collection

This painting intended for private devotion was modelled on Correggio's Madonna della Latte, now in Budapest. The prototype was very popular in central and northern Italy in the sixteenth century, attested by the numerous copies. It was also popular in Ravenna, where the Longhi family ran a workshop headed by Luca, his son Francesco and daughter Barbara. There are also Northern European variations of the theme, especially in works by Dieric Bouts, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling.
