The attribution to Lorenzetti is undisputed and it is dated by most around 1325, when the artist was painting frescoes with his helpers in the new church in Cortona which preserved the body of St Margaret.
The probable reason why the painting was executed on shaped wood is to create a picture that gives the impression of a sculpture. For this reason, this shaped cross is a rare work.
