Virgin and Child Enthroned with Six Angels

1415-20
Tempera on wood, 147 x 82 cm
Fundación Colección Thyssen-Bornemisza, Pedralbes

This painting follows the traditional compositional type of the Maestà (the Virgin and Child enthroned), and stylistically recalls the painting of that title by Giotto, although it lacks the severe monumentality of Giotto's work and is closer to the gentler style of Sienese art. All the figures are painted with a high degree of naturalism, although still retaining the stylized idealization found in Sienese and International Gothic painting.
