LORENZO Monaco
(b. ca. 1370, Siena (?), d. ca. 1425, Firenze)

Antiphonary (Choir Book 5)

1394
Tempera and gold on parchment
Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Florence

In the early years of Lorenzo Monaco's stay in the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, as well as painting devotional panels, mainly of modest dimensions, the young artist devoted himself above all decorating the monastery's choir books. The testimony of his early activity in the field of illustrated manuscripts is provided by the three antiphonaries that are preserved, unfortunately in rather damaged condition, in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence (Choir Books 1, 5 and 8), dated 1396, 1394, and 1395, respectively.

The initial shown here is from Choir Book 5.
