The Penitent St Jerome

1515
Oil on canvas, 41 x 33 cm
Allentown Art Museum, Allentown

In this painting, like in the somewhat earlier version now in Bucharest, St Jerome is depicted more as a penitent than as an intellectual. The twisting pose and the apparent disproportion between the various parts of the saint's body are badly composed but the landscape is magnificent.

The high quality canvas is well preserved, it is signed in gold, lower right on trunk: LAURENTIUS/ LOTUS/ 1515.
