St Lambert Reliquary

1467-71
Gold and silver gilt, height 53 cm
Cathedral of St Paul, Liège

The kneeling, bare-headed duke Charles the Bold appears to be introduced by St George, patron saint of knights and warriors. The choice of St George can be attributed to Charles special veneration of this warrior saint to whom he made an oath during his prior successful military campaign.
