The lifestyle of the foremost Czech lord as well as the highest-ranking official required, apart from other things, an imposing seat. Wilhelm von Rosenberg (1535-1592) took over in 1551 the medieval Ceský Krumlov Castle and over the years of 1560-90 turned the castle into a Renaissance residence. Reconstruction of the courtyard of the Upper Castle was carried out in the 1780s by Baldassare Maggi.
