This relief is on an altarpiece, carved by the Mantegazza brothers for the Capitolo dei Fratelli at the Certosa. In this the foreground figures are restricted to two planes, and the body of Christ forms a flat pattern with the upper arm parallel to the base. At the back a number of isolated scenes can be seen - the Crucifixion, the soldiers casting lots, the opening of the sepulchre - each of which is supplied with its own background irrespective of its place in the relief.
