Lamentation over the Dead Christ (detail)

1480s
Marble
Certosa, Pavia

The sculptor approached his subject-matter in a state of fevered exaltation. One of the Marys presses her emaciated face against Christ's head, the St John lifts Christ's disproportionately long left arm, and the Magdalen stretches her talons round Christ's leg. Yet in the original this is less apparent than in photograph, since the distant scenes are carved with remarkable delicacy and fastidiousness, and the widespread use of gilding in the figures reduces their expressive force.
