This relief was commissioned for the façade of the Certosa in Pavia.
The present façade reflects the overall design by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, approved by Ludovico Sforza in 1492. Amadeo was the leading local sculptor, architect, and engineer in Lombardy, active in Bergamo as well as Pavia and Milan. His façade incorporates marble reliefs that had been commissioned in 1473 by Galeazzo Maria Sforza for a somewhat less elaborate design. All of the reliefs have suffered damage and weathering, but The Mocking of Christ is sufficiently well preserved. It was produced by the Mantegazza brothers Antonio and Cristoforo Lombard sculptors who specialized in intricate carving of flattened figures evoking the character of ancient gems and cameos.
