Scenes from the Life of St Christopher (scene 6, detail)

The picture shows a detail of the Removal of the Body of St Christopher. In this scene the architecture combines set pieces from classical reliefs and buildings with city palaces of the Quattrocento to create a setting that in no way resembles an actual city. Vasari thought he could identify some of the people in the picture, who were therefore contemporaries from the 15th century rather than figures taken from the classical world.
