MANTEGNA, Andrea
(b. 1431, Isola di Carturo, d. 1506, Mantova)

Triumphs of Caesar (scene 1)

1485-95
Tempera on canvas, 267 x 278 cm
Royal Collection, Hampton Court

This scene shows trumpets, bearers of standards and banners. The soldiers are carrying boards with paintings of battles and views of conquered cities. These boards give Mantegna's vision of lost classical painting, of which little was known in the 15th century compared with the knowledge of architecture and sculpture.
