Jacobus Maris was a prominent figure in the Hague School. Initially he painted figural work, and subsequently landscapes. Six years in Paris gave him ample opportunity to study French art, and he especially admired Courbet and the atmospheric panoramic views of Daubigny. Back home, painting his native Dutch landscapes with a muted palette that registered subtly intimate nuances of light and hue, he evolved a distinctively Dutch style in works such as Allotment Gardens near The Hague.
