Matthijs Maris was exposed to various influences during his studies in The Hague, Paris and London. He espoused the sensitive realism of the Hague School in figural works, landscapes and portraits; but the impact of the later German Romantics and of the English Pre-Raphaelites also produced in Matthijs Maris a strong tendency towards dreamy, fairy-tale realms.
